Sharky Swimming Classes

Learn to swim and go from strength to strength

Structured swimming lessons to improve your child’s swimming in a friendly and rewarding environment.

Independent Swimming Lessons for Children 4yrs +

Children can typically start swimming independently, without a parent in the pool, around their fourth birthday. However, we understand that every child progresses at their own pace in their swimming journey. If your child is new to swimming, we may recommend a transitional class to help them build the skills and confidence needed for the next stage.

To swim independently, your child should feel happy and comfortable in the water without your presence and be able to swim using a noodle for support on both their front and back without being held.

Our structured programme follows the national and international guidelines for teaching swimming, focusing on developing confident and capable swimmers. We create a fun and engaging environment that encourages both progress and enjoyment in the water.

Our framework is designed around 8 distinct stages, each with clear targets for swimmers to achieve. As they progress, children earn a badge and certificate to celebrate their accomplishments and mark their readiness to move to the next stage. Along the way, our Swimming Pathway includes stepping stones such as distance and water skills badges, perfect for children who may need more time to master specific skills before advancing to more challenging tasks.

In every stage, we focus on essential skills including safe pool entries and exits, flotation, balance, rotation, orientation, aquatic breathing, streamlining, water safety, travel, and coordination. These fundamental skills are key to developing and refining swimming strokes, building a strong foundation for confident and capable swimmers.

Our aim is to increase swimming distances with a clear emphasis on technique. The four main strokes are taught, front & back crawl, breaststroke, and butterfly although with the latter this is introduced in its entirety at the age of 7 or when the child is physically strong enough. Dolphin kick is taught during the initial stages as a contrasting activity and if your child swam with us as a toddler, they may already be efficient in this.

Earlier life saving techniques are now progressed to the next level. Children will learn to swim in suitable clothing and taught techniques on how to remove them whilst treading water. The beach flag system is taught along with awareness of Riptides, signalling for help, and aiding others who may be in danger without putting themselves at risk.

Children will not only be learning to swim but engage in a whole new set of skills to prepare them for other water-based activities such as Water Polo, Synchro, and even competitive swimming. They will develop a love for the water which will lead them into a healthier lifestyle.

Our programme seems endless as new skills are taught preparing children to become truly remarkable swimmers in every aspect whilst keeping a fun element to their lessons.

We are confident we will see some of our little wonders make the Olympics one day and already have a few of our swimmers who have joined the GB Youth Squad.”
